England National Team’s Future
English national football team has bright future! The U20 and U21 squads proved that. England U20 won the World Cup 2017 in Republic of Korea. That was the 7th edition of this youth tournament and a first title for The Three Lions! In addition, the U21 team made it to the semi-finals of the Euro U21 in Poland after 2 victories and a draw in the group stage of the competition.
To begin with, England U20 started with 2 victories and a draw in the group stage of the U20 World Cup. The Paul Simpson’s players beat Argentina and the hosts of Korea and finished with a draw against Guinea. Then, the Englishmen won 4 games in a row to lift the World Cup U20 title! The U20 team had no problems to record victories against Costa Rica (1/8 final), Mexico (quarterfinal), Italy (semi-final) and Venezuela (final). There are lots of players who deserve to be praised for the performance they showed! The goalkeeper of Newcastle – Freddie Woodman took part in 6 matches and only conceded 2 goals. He saved a penalty in the final against Venezuela!
Jonjoe Kenny (Everton) and Fikayo Tomori were the key players in defence, playing in all the 7 games of the competition. Kieran Dowell pulled the strings in midfield. He scored the decisive goal against Republic of Korea and made 2 assists until the end of the competition, helping his team win the tournament. 3 of the attackers should be highlighted. Dominic Solanke of Chelsea was named for the best player of the tournament. He became the second best goal-scorer with 4 goals. The other two perspective forwards are both Everton’s players. Ademola Lookman scored 3 goals, 2 of which were against Costa Rica which, secured the victory. Lookman has already scored a goal in the Premier League – against Man City. The last player I am going to take a look at is the goal-scorer in the final game – Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He has already became a regular Everton player. He has also already scored a goal in The Premier League – against Hull City. Calvert-Lewin recently signed for Everton in a £1.5 m. deal.
To continue with, now we are going to overview the U21 team of England. The Three Lions didn’t lost a single match in the qualifiers for The Euro U21. They recorded 6 victories and 2 draws. In the group stage of the tournament, The Three Lions recorded 2 victories and a draw, which secured them a place at the semi-finals, which will be held on 27th June.
The names of the key players in the U21 are already popular enough to the football fans. Calum Chambers, Nathaniel Chalobah, James Ward-Prowse, Lewis Baker and many more will surely become an integral part of the English men’s national team in near future. There are also a lot of talented forwards like Redmond and Abraham, and good midfielders like Swift. You should also take a look at Alfie Mawson, who is a key Swansea City’s defender.
At both ends, I think that in a near future England will have one of the best national teams in the world. I can’t wait to see that!
