Man United Won The Europa League!
Manchester United triumphed in The Europa League, which was the only club tournament they hadn’t won so far. The Red Devils won the final game against Ajax 2-0 at Friends Arena in Stockholm. The result was fair, as the Jose Mourinho’s players played with a perfect tactics discipline, not giving Ajax any chance to find a way to the Romero’s net.
The Red Devils were better in the beginning of the game. They scored the first goal in the 18th minute. Marouane Fellaini passed the ball to Paul Pogba, who shot towards the goal. There was a ricochet in the leg of Ajax’s player and the ball went into Onana’s net. 1-0! Then, the Jose Mourinho’s players gave the initiative to their opponent, but the Dutch players were finding it very difficult to create clear goal-scoring chances. The stats are also showing this – even though Ajax had the possession of the ball in 65 % of the time, they managed to made an attempt on target on only 5 occasions.
Just three minutes after the break Manchester United decided the game, scoring their second goal of the night. Juan Mata delivered an excellent cross from a corner kick, Chris Smalling played the ball with a header and Henrikh Mkhitaryan sent it into the net. After this goal, The Red Devils played mainly on counter attacks. The Dutch players tried their best, but they weren’t effective enough when attacking. They were passing the ball around the United’s box, being not sharp enough.
Jose Mourinho played Wayne Rooney in the last few minutes of the game. This match may have been the forward’s last game with Manchester United’s colours. However, Rooney was brought on to receive the applause of the Red Devils’ fans. He was a part of one of the most successful era’s in Manchester United history, and his appearance against Ajax may become a historical moment – his last game for the club.
