Premier League | Week 22 Review
Swansea City recorded a crucial 3-2 victory against Liverpool at Anfield, which was more than a precious one for The Swans, who are fighting for their place in the league. With the 3 points, the Paul Clement’s players got out of the relegation zone, having collected 18 points. On the other hand, Liverpool are now 10 points down from the leaders Chelsea, and the Reds’ chances for winning the competition look very small. Fernando Llorente was the hero for The Swans, as the Spaniard scored twice against The Reds.
The Red Devils finished with a 1-1 draw against Stoke City at The Bet365 Stadium. The Potters were leading 1-0 at the break, even without having a single attempt towards Man United target! Juan Mata scored an own goal in the 19th minute. About 15 minutes later, he missed to equalize sending the ball over the bar from a clear position. However, in the 94th minute, the substitution Wayne Rooney scored his 250th goal for The Red Devils, beating Bobby Charlton’s record for the best goal-scorer in Manchester United’s history!
Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur finished with a 2-2 draw. The Citizens must regret a lot for missing the chance to take the 3 points, because they were leading 2-0 until the 58th minute, but The Spurs managed to equalize with 13 minutes to go.
These 3 matches brought great news for Arsenal and Chelsea. The Gunners struggled a lot against tough Clarets, but eventually won 2-1 after a controversial goal in the 97th minute! Laurent Koscielny was offside, but the assistant referee didn’t see that and the French defender was fouled in the box, giving Alexis Sanchez the chance to score from the penalty spot.
To continue with, The Blues had no problems against Hull City at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea won 2-0 and maintained their leadership in the standings. Diego Costa opened the score in the added time of the first half, and Gary Cahill secured the victory for The Blues 9 minutes before the final whistle.
In another very interesting game Everton took the 3 points from their visit to Crystal Palace. The Toffees had a ton of goal-scoring chances, but were denied by the in-form goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who made 9 good saves. However, the right fullback Seamus Coleman found the net from a close distance in the 87th minute, sending The Eagles into the relegation zone!
Sunderland are in a very bad position, being at the bottom of the table after another defeat. This time, The Black Cats lost to West Bromwich Albion 2-0. Darren Fletcher opened the score after a half an hour with a magnificent volley. 6 minutes later Brunt scored a screamer to secure the points for his team.
The Saints smashed the champions Leicester City 3-0 at The St. Mary’s Stadium. They have recently shown a great form, winning 3 of their last 4 competitive matches. The Foxes looked totally helpless on the pitch, as they couldn’t create many goal-scoring chances. The referee also helped them, disallowing Morgan’s own goal. Obviously, without Mahrez and Slimani, The Foxes aren’t competitive enough.
Andy Carroll found the net twice in West Ham’s visit to Middlesbrough, in the Hammers’ 3-1 victory against The Boro. That’s West Ham second victory in a row in The Premier League, which secured them the 10th position at the moment.
In conclusion, Bournemouth and Watford recorded a 2-2 draw. The Hornets had the lead twice in the match, but The Cherries took the point eventually with Benik Afobe’s goal in the 82nd minute.
