Tottenham Hotspur | Season 2016/17 preview.
Spurs are strong enough!
Tottenham Hotspur finished in 3rd position in The Premier League last campaign and now Spurs will play in the group stage of the most prestigious European club competition – The Champions League. Spurs have kept their best players and if they continue with the consistency, Tottenham Hotspur can achieve magnificent things this season!
Mauricio Pochettino will stick to his preferred tactics 4-2-3-1, with high pressure in front of the opponent’s goal. The Argentinian proved that his tactics is very useful, as the team was very effective in attack, scoring 69 goals in 38 matches in The Premier League last season (league’s second best).
The Transfers:
Mauricio Pochettino managed to keep all his best players, as Tottenham didn’t sell any of their footballers. Moreover, the Argentinian manager can be happy he signed two very good players. The first transfer Tottenham made, was signing Victor Wanyama of Southampton. Spurs paid more than €13 m. to have the midfielder in their squad.
Furthermore, Vincent Janssen of AZ Alkmaar joined Tottenham Hotspur. The Dutchman became the Eredivisie top goal-scorer last season with 27 goals. In addition, Janssen managed to score 3 goals in his first 5 matches for the Holland national team! So, Pochettino has maybe made the right choice. We will see whether there will be a good partnership in attack between Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen.
Key Players:
As Tottenham kept all their best players, Pochettino can rely on his usual starters for Spurs. Hugo Lloris will be in goal. The Belgian international players Alderweireld and Vertonghen will surely again be the first-choice defenders for Tottenham, while the new signing Wanyama will be used as a central midfielder. Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen (the assists leader) and the Korean attacking midfielder Heung-Min Son will help the attackers – Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen.
Probable Starting XI:
- 4-2-3-1: Hugo Lloris; Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderwireld, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose; Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier (Ryan Mason); Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela, Heung-Min Son; Harry Kane (Vincent Janssen).
The History:
Mauricio Pochettino knows how hard is the life in The Premier League. So, maybe his target will be reaching a Top 4 place. But, nobody knows what can happen if Tottenham are showing the performances, they did during the last season. Spurs must keep working and the results will come.
But, when we talk about history – the last time Spurs won The Premier League (English First Division) was in 1961. And since 1963, Tottenham have inevitably been behind the best two teams in England. The qualification for The Champions League in the last season has been the first for Spurs since 2012, when Tottenham qualified in 4th place.
The Expectations:
With the classy players in the squad, Tottenham are expected to win a trophy this season. The most important thing for the fans is the good performance in the Champions League. However, it will be extremely difficult for Tottenham Hotspur to win The Premier League, but some experts think they can do it, with the consistency they are showing.
To continue with, Spus’ form in The Premier League suffered from their participation in The Europa League last season. There is the possibility the same to happen, as they are going to play in The Champions League. Pochettino may concentrate on the performance in the most prestigious European club tournament.
Vincent Janssen has a profile that fits perfectly for us. He has quality in the box and he’s a striker that likes to fight and work for the team. That is perfect for us. We are very excited that he has joined us. His human profile is also perfect for the team. We always care about this. In general, he’s a player that fits the team. I have watched him a lot when he was at AZ Alkmaar.Mauricio Pochettino
